Linguists: while they have complicated histories, all languages are valid and interesting examples of how humans exist and behave and communicate
Me *making Galactic Basic into an in-universe conlang created by the Republic Department of Linguistic Standards (DoLS) to impose Republic cultural domination in advance of Republic political and economic domination as a weapon against Hutt & other factions' potential control over systems, often with the effect of replacing and wiping out the indigenous languages of entire planets due to way it was created to be easy to learn for a wide variety of species and linguistic backgrounds*: sure yeah but this one is evil
Linguists: well…umm…uhh…you’re probably overestimating your ability to make a language that appeals to as wide a variety of first language speakers… Umm…and no language is—well—hmm…
Me: but also it's the only language the clones are taught growing up. Which is a tragedy among tragedies of course but they'll also adapt it and add new words and make a patchwork from other languages they hear on a thousand different planets and study during long hyperspace journeys, and they'll code switch to perfect "standard phonology" basic with certain people and most of their self-invented names are in Basic too because no one ever gave them names and nobody else actually names their kids in Basic because there are barely any names in Basic and this whole thing will be a form of Basic largely untouched by the Republic education systems beholden to the DoLS for funding
Linguists *hurriedly packing their bags to come and study this*:
👀👀👀
Me *in a convertible, smug*: get in losers, it's called BibiuBubui and you're late

Don’t worry in Basic there are actually two words. They do happen to sound very similar tho.

The Republic’s conception of the nation state is highly planet based, encouraging a single government to manage an entire planet, without uniting entire systems. This pushes homogeneity of cultures and uncomplicates extraction of resources for the Core by removing competition for resources locally.
States which consist of less then an entire planet thus become either Enclaves (if they’re much smaller like the Jedi) or “Conflicted Governments” (if they’re several states split more equally across the planet, and regardless of if those states are actually in conflict with one another). Both enclaves and conflicted governments experience second class rights in the Republic government.
Enclaves get no direct representation in the Senate, little trade protection, limited judicial autonomy, the inability to sign treaties without republic permission, and subservience to the planetary government in many other aspects as well.
Conflicted Governments get limited representation in the Senate, some trade protection, judicial autonomy, and the ability to sign treaties, but are the constant sites of proxy wars by other planetary governments.
Some early to join planets like Mirial manage to form nominal planetary governments without the different states giving up much regional authority (partly due to their resistance to the introduction of new languages like Bibiububui (Galactic Basic)), but those loopholes were closed in the following decades, leaving most planets vulnerable to the Conflicted Governments model.
The Jedi were labeled an enclave before most of this system was set up, and were grandfathered into the new system. They initially had a few more rights then this system gives, but have since ended up with less.
I am thinking that maybe the Jedi are, legally speaking, an enclave within Coruscant. Or at least were originally under the Ruusan Treaties, and their protections have gradually been weakened as the Senate legislates about them more and more as an institution.
They would be a weird enclave, but based on my very limited knowledge of enclaves that's normal for enclaves…

Ok I’ve been informed of the existence of Plains Indian Sign Language (aka Hand Talk, Plains Sign Talk, Plains Sign Language, or First Nation Sign Language), which is super cool and can stay.
I would actually love if anybody knows about other non evil linguafrancas!
Linguafranca sounds so good on paper…. unfortunately evil.
[ID: gif of a leopard yawning languidly. End ID]
#context for this entire post is I’ve been building Star Wars basic as an extra evil lingua Franca and it’s infected me with hatred#it’s super cool tho#it’s called bibiububui#and bibiububui is to accessibility like Mao was to feminism#linguistics#lingua franca#plains Indian sign language#gif

Ok I actually made the words!
Cunii - (non-medicinal) drugs
Cinui - spices/flavorings
Cinui gets swapped out for cunii to avoid censors and law enforcement until eventually it takes on the semantic meaning of "drugs" for most speakers of Basic. At some point the meaning narrows to refer to one specific drug, in most contexts. This meaning spreads among essentially the entre Basic-speaking population of the galaxy due to expansive drug trade, and then even into Huttese and other languages as a loan word. Thus by the clone wars era, we get the near ubiquitous use of *spice = space cocaine*
the ambiguity of what "spice" is in any star wars context is killing me. did Eedy upgrade to a fancy blend or start drinking like. cocaine tea
